Backyard Produce Garden

By Jane Radatz No Comments
What were your biggest successes this season?

Our garden produced over 6000 pounds of fruits and vegetables this year. We donated this produce to a local food pantry to help low-income families and seniors in our area.

What challenges did or does your project face?

We face the normal gardening challenges -- insects such as aphids, diseases such as powdery mildew, critters such as mice and raccoons, and environmental challenges such as high heat, frost, heavy rains, and high winds.

How are you working to overcome them?

We use organic pesticides and fungicides. beneficial nematodes, humane traps, and row covers to overcome these challenges.

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

Black row covers function well as shade cloth when the sun is strong. White row covers keep crops warm when weather gets cold.
