With the help of our local technical high school's horticulture program, we successfully replaced Bowie's rotting garden beds with brand new narrower beds that will be easier for students to reach across. We are currently in the process of filling these new beds with soil and preparing them for a planting event with three grade levels next week. We will use square ft gardening to facilitate planting with students, and plant beets, carrots, and potatoes to harvest in the fall.
What challenges did or does your project face?
Main challenges of the project have been communication and making sure everyone is on the same page, as we are communicating between several buildings and departments.
How are you working to overcome them?
Making sure to connect relevant parties and follow up to ensure they are working together effectively.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
Take full advantage of the resources close at hand! If you have a local horticulture program, befriend them. And don't be afraid to make asks, but know that you might have to get creative in your communication approach.
