Green Bay Garden Blitz 2019
GBGB installed 71 garden boxes in 2019, 48 beds that were free to schools and that serve low-income populations including the Veterans manor, house of hope, and shelter care. We delivered boxes and soil to 13 schools: Jefferson, Keller, Nicolet, Minoka- Hill, McAuliffe, Fort Howard, Howe, Eisenhower, Danz, Sullivan, Lincoln, Bay Port High school, St Thomas Moore school.
What challenges did or does your project face?
Volunteer and staff turn over. Every year we have hired a new coordinator and we have a new team coordinating the event so that makes it very difficult to remain consistent. The amount of time training is just too much. We had trouble selling boxes to earn the money that we needed to offset the cost of the providing free boxes to the schools. We had troubles with logistics.
How are you working to overcome them?
We do a meeting at the end of each Blitz and talk about how we can improve it. We focus on improving those things each year.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
We are in our 7 th year of this project and we need to question if it is worth moving forward with it. the amount of work that is needed to do this job is overwhelming and I don't know if it is achieving the sustainability that is required for a project to proceed. people should have come along by now that like the project so much they stick around.
