Operation Empower garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Paris, TX

By Curt Fendley No Comments
What were your biggest successes this season?

We were able to build 6 raised garden beds doubling the size of our garden from last year. It has grown an unbelievably amount of squash, peppers, and tomatoes for any club member to take home for free. We are also learning valuable life skills! We grew a lot of lettuce early in the season and it was surprising how many kids didn’t eat lettuce until they ate what we grew!

What challenges did or does your project face?

Biggest challenge was setting up a watering system. The faucet nearest our garden required us to hire a plumber to repair but we set up a timer and portable water sprinkler. We need to put in an actual sprinkler system next year because our hoses get damaged accidentally by the lawn care crew.

How are you working to overcome them?

We will fundraise later to raise the money to put in a sprinkler system.

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

We learned that despite doubling our garden it still needs to be bigger! Check out our Facebook page to see more photos.
