Seniors loved the "hands on" experience of planting, watering the beds and having success of reaping the vegetables. Some seniors that did not participate wanted to get the vegetables and the participating, planting seniors said "no way!" We had success with kale, lettuce and peas in the Spring/Summer and have now planted broccoli, more kale and mixed greens.
What challenges did or does your project face?
We placed our raised bed on our patio so the seniors with wheelchairs and walkers could access easily. Heat from patio coupled with lack of shade made hydration a challenge. We had a rain barrel donated to our project which helped, but with heat radiating off the patio and open to the sun, some of the plants didn't live. Our tomato and pepper plants grew but didn't fruit. We are only open during the week, so on the weekends, the plants would dehydrate.
How are you working to overcome them?
We would like to apply for another grant to get a drip irrigation system and some shades for the patio.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
Shade is a must, especially if you are placing your raised beds over concrete ground.
