What were your biggest successes this season?

Our biggest success was rebuilding and expanding our Day Avenue Community Garden - [pictured in the uploaded file] - we doubled the the amount of garden plots effectively reaching 10 families in this neighborhood.

What challenges did or does your project face?

The biggest challenge was losing our Southeast garden and the prospect of finding a new location in that area of the city. It is an area that is in dire need of better access to healthy, fresh foods and we were devastated to lose one of our largest gardens there in spite of attempts to raise money to purchase the land.

How are you working to overcome them?

We have decided to partner with the City of Roanoke and a prominent local business and foundation to place our next community garden in SE Roanoke on public city park land. We are currently working to raise funds, write grants, and find corporate partners to help us make this a success!

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

Always have, at the very least, an MOU if not a contract when you build community gardens on private property.
