Rosewood Avenue Elementary School Garden

What were your biggest successes this season?

We were able to raise enough money through funding programs like Seed Money to fund our garden program without any funding from our parent/teacher organization. This was crucial because of budget restrictions to schools throughout LAUSD, our parent teacher group is focused on saving our library and librarian from the budget cuts.

What challenges did or does your project face?

Not being able to raise enough money to keep our garden. Wanting to add an extra day each week to the garden program.

How are you working to overcome them?

In addition to increasing our push for our Seed Money funding project this year, we added a Sees candy sale that helped us raise an additional $2,000 for our garden. We also have a Bingo game event that raised more than $2,000 as well.

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

Get parents to come out to the garden and work with their children during a school day. It makes them appreciate the program more, and feel more positive because they share in their child's school development and joy in the garden. Our garden teacher has a blog that you might want to visit that shows what we are up to at Rosewood - especially the science learning activities - https://jenniferandersongrowla.org
