South Cumminsville Community Garden

What were your biggest successes this season?

Using funding from SeedMoney and other local grants, we built 13 raised beds in our community garden.

What challenges did or does your project face?

Early in the garden season, we learned that the soil in our garden has an elevated lead level. Because we had done testing years ago when the garden was first created and gotten clean results, we were surprised and upset to learn this. When we found out about the elevated lead level, we weren’t sure if we would be able to continue gardening in the space.

How are you working to overcome them?

Thanks to SeedMoney and generous support from some of our local partners, we were able to purchase clean soil and materials to build 13 raised beds, effectively saving the growing season for our gardeners. Our gardeners and many wonderful volunteers came together on May 5, 2018, to work hard and get the beds ready for the season. We are grateful indeed!

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

Never be afraid to ask for help. When we got the news, our first step was to reach out to our local partners to learn what we needed to know. Thankfully, many of them stepped up to the plate and helped us find the funding and materials we needed to get the job done.
