Our winter garden harvested over 400 lbs of food. Summer garden harvest totals are not in yet, but we have lost peas to flooding rains and some okra due to pests.
What challenges did or does your project face?
We had several freezes for the winter garden. The summer garden has experienced more humidity/moisture than usual so our insect population and mildews are up here. We are using more organic pesticide to this point of the summer than we used all summer last year. Also it has taken awhile to catch on where families are willing to come and work to receive the food.
How are you working to overcome them?
We have held fast to our rules that those who come receive the food and people have learned that they need to work for food. We are also working harder on getting the word out beyond the immediate neighborhood that the garden is in.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
Just like anything that you do that is new, it will take time to catch on. Be faithful and people will come!
