We've started expansion of our educational gardens with the rehabilitation and regeneration of approximately 5 acres of one-time sugarcane land into a prime organic orchard.
What challenges did or does your project face?
Funding is always a challenge at our non-profit but we've received additional grant monies from other funders and are pushing forward with the ambitious project.
How are you working to overcome them?
We are creative in our approaches to capital projects and seek assistance from a variety of private sources and foundations.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
We experienced a very wet winter and spring in Hawaii and the project was slowed as a result. We're currently experimenting with a variety of native windbreak/cover crops in an effort to improve the soil and limits the impacts of invasive vegetation.
