Three Sisters Garden

By Rita HamletOctober 11, 2017 No Comments
What were your biggest successes this season?

Engaging youth in growing a traditional native American companion garden. Highlights included growing and harvesting popcorn, seeing how the three sister vegetables supported each other, sampling corn products, and making cornhusk dolls!

What challenges did or does your project face?

1. Not all children that started the project finished the project.
2. We did not grow one pumpkin despite numerous pumpkin blossoms.

How are you working to overcome them?

1. Restructuring our youth garden club: such as signing up for a series of classes rather than one at a time
2. Talking with Master Gardeners

What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?

We learned that the right crop/vegetable can be a jumping off point for many learning opportunities from almost any discipline. Corn was a gateway to history, agriculture, health, culinary pursuits, literature, crafts...
