The garden was very successful with producing a winter garden to harvest broccoli, cabbages, cauliflower, chard and herbs. The students had lessons that allowed them to work the garden and grow their own food that they enjoyed when they harvested with a cooking lesson. The grant has allowed us to purchase mulch and tools for the garden to keep it looking great and to keep the student working it.
What challenges did or does your project face?
The biggest challenge is not having enough staff to cover all the students needs when we are out in the garden and keeping up with the maintenance of the garden.
How are you working to overcome them?
We are trying to come up with better scheduling solutions that might make it easier to make sure all the students and garden needs are met.
What did you or your project learn this season that might be useful to others as well?
While we were excited to expand the garden last summer it was challenging to keep up with all the beds and upkeep. It is important to dream big but be reasonable at what you are able to keep up with.
